It is with much regret that we inform you of the passing of our Sac High School history teacher, Mr. William "Bill" Mahan on August 18, 2016.  There was a very nice obituary published in the Sacramento Bee on August 28, 2016.  Mr. Mahan attended several of our class reunions, and led a tour of the old Sacramento City Cemetery for our class, as well as a tour of the "Fab 40's" homes in downtown Sacramento and a historical tour of the old quarry at East Portal Park in Sacramento.  He will be very much missed.

from Terrie (Theresa) Hjersman (Anderson):

I was sad to hear of Mr. Mahan's passing. I loved his AmHist class. He was the only teacher I had at Sac who looked at me and listened to me as a person of worth -- or at least, potential. Without his encouragement I never would have attended college.

After Bill retired I played golf and went on runs with him. We would always seem to get into long discussions about local history and baseball. He had River Cat's season tickets and invited me to a few games.Bill would always insist we get there early and go down to the bull pen and watch the pitchers warm up. He wanted to see how good a command they had with their pitches. Bill also knew the best places in the stadium to get a draft beer.

The last time I saw Bill was over a beer at The Rubicon Brewery a year or so ago. He still had that twinkle in his eyes and a great smile. Bill will be greatly missed.

Never had him as a teacher, but did get to tour the Old Sac cemetery with Bill and it was great. He was so informative and you knew he loved it! I like Howdy's remembrance of him! Bill was a character, for sure!

Once when Mr Mahan was helping with the track team, I asked his advice. We were preparing for a meet and I was congested. It was affecting my workouts. I asked Mr Mahan what I should do. He suggested steam. He said it won't make you run faster but you will feel better. He was exactly right. I didn't run faster! But, I did feel better.

Thanks Mr Mahan
